About
We bought Patchwork in 2012 and opened for holiday lets in 2014. Over the years we have totally refitted the interior but it is an ongoing project. Parts of the cottage are believed to date back to the late 17th century but, before we bought it, some modern additions using the wrong materials had caused some issues which we have had to address.
The final stage of the restoration work is the replacement of the external render. The rear elevation has been treated with traditional lime render, completed in the spring of 2025. We were lucky to find a local craftsman who really understands stone cottages and their need to breath. Our current plan is for the front elevation to be similarly restored in 2026 along with refreshing the planting in the garden.
Inside the cottage, most of the rooms have been remodelled or refitted using a combination of modern fittings and traditional materials. Our aim is to maintain the feel of a period cottage but furnished and fitted out for modern life.
The owner and her family get down to Patchwork as often as we can to enjoy walking, golf, and exploring the fantastic North Devon coast and countryside - as well as they wonderful hospitality in Appledore's pubs, cafés and restaurants.

Testimonials

We have received some lovely comments on line and in the guest book at the cottage over the years.
We also appreciate suggestions for anything we could add to the cottage to make guests' stay more comfortable. We do consider all of these carefully and where practicable we will act.

Here are a few photos ... more will follow in 2025. In the meantime, for more photos please see our listing on Airbnb by following the booking link.

The sitting room
From the front entrance, there is a small hall with space for coats and a boot rack. We also leave umbrellas there for your use. This leads to the principal room, the sitting room/dining room. This is a cosy room with a modern, fuel-efficient log-burning stove (installed in 2022) and sofas to seat 4.

The dining area
The dining area is set for 4 people but can be extended to seat 6. The stools in the kitchen can be adjusted to provide additional seating.

Evening in the kitchen
The kitchen is fitted out for family cooking and entertaining, the owner being a keen cook. There is a 4 ring induction hob and electric fan oven. You will also find a slow-cooker and microwave if you don't fancy getting out the pots and pans and a wide range of utensils and serving dishes. In the separate utility adjacent to the kitchen, there is a fridge/freezer, washer-dryer and dishwasher. The seating in the kitchen is a perfect place for a quick breakfast or for a drink and a chat whilst meals are prepared.
